Just entered the Halls of the Defenders (the forum) and don't know where to start? Read on…
To do:
1. Register. It only takes a second, and then you will be able to post on the threads here. Also, it will remember what you have read and what is new.
When you fill in your profile, please take a moment to select the right Personalized Picture:
These are the default icons that show up on the character creation screen in WoW. If you want more options, please let me know.
2. Mark everything as "read" When you first start, it can be overwhelming to see dozens of unread threads and hundreds of unread posts. My advice, enter each "Hall" and mark everything as read. Go back and read the old history later. Once you have marked everything as read, the next time you come back the forum what has been changed since last time will be marked, and it will be easier to jump into the active stories.
3. Read the Charters. There is a Guild Charter, and each House has a House Charter. They are all on the Defenders of Valor Website.
4. Assist your House. The four Houses have been set up to assist in RP and to help develop camaraderie. Make a special effort to follow the threads in your own house and contribute to the ongoing storyline.
5. Contribute to the Forums. Role-playing takes place *both* in-game and on the forums. Please participate; it makes it better for everyone! Talk of the spirits; drink an ale; make your own contribution. Make your presence felt in our Halls. If you are interested in advancing in rank, participation here is essential.
6. Submit a History. This is an important part of the Guild. It helps you to explore your character and helps other find out something about you, which helps everyone role-play. Besides, it’s a heck of a lot of fun to be creative. Take the time to think of something. What motivates you? Where do you come from? Why did you choose the talents/pet/items that you have? Once you have thought of something, post a thread for your biography in your proper House and tell your tale, or send it to me directly by using a message on the forums or by email at windfoot_keldamyr@yahoo.ca. If you are having trouble thinking of ideas, you could even start a thread asking for brainstorming ideas. Guild members love to throw ideas out!
7. Foster Collaborative RP, don't "Block." Work with the ideas that other players throw out on the forums. That is how the best RP happens. On a related note, please do not pursue “conflict”-based RP (such as hating or threatening another member) unless you have OK’d it with the other player (and probably your Lord) first.
8. Familiarize Yourself with the House Ranks Each House has a ranking system. Read the House Charters to learn about yours. Treat your House Lord with due respect. You can work your way up in rank by participating in on-line RP and by contributing on the forums. Promotion is at the discretion of the House leaders. There may also be promotion rituals.
9. Disputes (Real and RP): Hopefully there will be no real disputes between guild-mates. However, if someone bothers you or behaves in a way that is inappropriate (e.g. rude/insulting, poor role-playing, too much OOC chat), try to work it our privately. You can whisper a Lord to help as well. Flaming someone in open chat in-game or on the forums is grounds for dismissal from the guild. For more detail, see the Guild and House Charters. It is also possible to pursue RP conflict, but only with the consent of the member and your House Lord.
10. Contribute to the On-going Storylines. The best role-playing happens in the mix of ideas between people. If you have some good ideas for a RP event in your character’s life or for changes to the House, the Charter or the Guild, or anything else, send a note to your Lord, start a thread in the “Out of Character” forum, or email me privately at windfoot_keldamyr@yahoo.ca. I will then bring it up for a private discussion among the Lords. Some of our best events have come from the lives of our characters!
11. Get the Word Out. Know someone who wants to be part of a strong Role-Playing guild? Tell them about the Defenders. Although we have high standards, we are always looking for new members. If you know someone, introduce them to a Lord as a likely candidate.
