Medieval-metal fusion has also been done by Saltatio Mortis, In Extremo, and Cultus Ferox, among others. But they aren't nearly as much fun in live shows as CC. (In Germany, this apparently qualifies as popular music, at least to the extent that it gets airplay on radio stations.)
P.S. If you ever get a chance to see CC in Germany, go. The audience sings along and stuff, just like at a Garth Brooks (eek!) concert.

Great posts everyone! Val, I have also loved AFI since 'The Art of Drowning' album. This new album, 'December Underground'... is... AMAZING! I am now also getting into Avenged Sevenfold because of you, which ironically is going against my "no-heavy-make-up-in-music" rule... Rheyna, your fusion taste has opened my eyes to new frontiers for my ears! Corpus Corax = awesome! Some more of my favorite list: Angels and Airwaves (Tom Delonge's, from Blink182, new band; I just bought the album and it is awesome. It is one of those albums that you must listen to all the way through with big headphones. So good.): www.angelsandairwaves.com/MXPX (One of the first band's I really digged that was not influenced by my father. Good, classic punk that I still get in the mood for often. Oh yeah, their shows kick major butt.): www.mxpx.com/Less than Jake (I loved them more when they were ska. I miss ska... too bad it died. But their new stuff is not that bad) : www.lessthanjake.com/More to come later!

Had to pop in here, even though I can't access my own iTunes as I'm at my parents house. I could probably post 5 KINDS of music I like and have lots of, and still ramble for too long, so I"m gonna try to stick in categories rather than by artist. Like Kanammer, I am also a member of the SCA, and I have done a lot of my undergraduate research in Medieval Music (my recently delivered diploma says "Music History" on it! woot!). I can definitely recommend the group 'Altramar' www.altramar.org/- Jann Cosart (their vielle player) was one of my professors, and she's fantastic. This is about as close to the real thing as you can get. Just dont expect... heavy dancing beat. It's medieval instrumental/vocal music - so it can be pretty subdued. Also, if you like madrigal/motet type vocal polyphony, check out Anonymous 4. www.anonymous4.com/ Really good stuff. I need to check out the fusion links you posted Rheyna - they all sound WONDERFUL, especially the gregorian/metal and the persian/medieval. As for the music I listen to most often (that isn't medieval chant/instrumental stuff), that would definitely be jazz. Though I'm all about listening to just about anything except bad rap and bad country, and I do love the Beatles (how can you not?!) and... well lots of other stuff you guys have posted already. Solo Players: Miles Davis ('Kind of Blue' is my favorite album, dig the Coltrane on that one too, but then his fusion stuff is also awesome. Jazz Trumpet meets Hip Hop in 'Du-bop' is definitely different), Vince Guaraldi, Oscar Peterson, Bill Evans (especially 'Portrait in Jazz') -Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band www.gordongoodwin.com/bfb.shtml (modern rep big band out of LA) - these guys are sick. I dont have their newest album yet, but... SICK I tell you! Check out "Sing, Sang, Sung", "Bach 2 part Invention in d-minor", and "Muevo los Huesos" (clips on website, there may be more clips available on amazon) Also - Eddie Daniels - www.eddiedanielsclarinet.com/ one of the top jazz improvisors alive today, and a really kick-ass clarinet player. His jazz stuff is impeccable, and his legit (classical) stuff is amazing. (so clean, it's like soap) The out of print recording of the Brahms Quintet is one of my favorite clarinet recordings ever. (Other great classical clarinet players: Sabine Meyer, Larry Combs, David Shifrin, John Bruce Yeh, Michelle Zukovsky, Stanley Drucker.) My favorite Latin stuff - definitely Buena Vista Social Club (Cuban) www.amazon.com/Buena-Vista-Social-Club/dp/B000005J56 , and then a local group (6-12 guys, depending on the night) called Guaramina or Norte de Havana. I know several of the cats that play in Norte, so I may be able to post a recording later from the demo CD that I convinced one of them to give me (: <sigh> I've rambled long enough, and this stuff is making me miss playing in the jazz groups I used to gig with, so I'll stop. Sorry Guds, if I went WAY past the 5 that I was supposed to be allowed, and I didn't really even get into all the other music I have...

NECRO ATTACK! Only because I recently discovered Apocalyptica: a four cello band that excels at Metallica (and other metal) covers, as well as original stuff. These guys rock! Metalica cover: Nothing Else MattersHauntingly awesome... A heavier song: PathIt is a live version, so song may sound mushy, but it shows how four guys can make cellos sound crazy cool.
