Keep me informed... not sure when I'm going to be able to pick this thing up... but I might also get into the Alpha for LK

(Hi gusy, been a while, I know, but with the advent of Cel deciding to try AoC, I figured I'd chime in.)
Well, I've played around 3 different classes to 20, the Conquerer, the Assassin and the Bear Shaman.
So far as I can tell, the single player game has to be one of the more interesting aspects, mainly because it points to the fact that you can almost Solo the entire game (or so I've been led to believe) I broke down and played a PvPRP server, Hyperborea because it's an oceanic server and it isn't bogged down at all times. As for PvP, I remember being ganked on WoW and getting incredibly upset because you could NOT win if they got the drop on you, but here, it seems to be a bit more skill oriented. On my Conquerer, I managed to hold my own whenever entering the, now effectionately titled Gank Land zone, White Sands Island. But, I have had the pleasure of finding some interesting and mature company of moderate role players who band together and find PKers and slaughter them.
This, leads me to my next worry, party play. I figured the game would be a terrible group experience, but I was wrong, very wrong. Because all the mobs have their own collision zones, it is actually useful to stand in a "formation" in coherence with your surroundings, for one example, myself (as a Conquerer) another Guardian and a Barbarian stood side by side in a tight hallway with a Ranger to out backs. We simply stood there and chopped down the mobs with the utmost ease.
But, yeah, there are still a handful of problems.
My biggest issue being the lack of the implemented Trading system. Funcom says they are hard at work at delivering the system, but when I see an empty auction house or "market" I cry. That and there are already reports of exploiters that somehow found a way to reach unreasonable levels in a manner of hours. (As high as level 60 out of a possible 80 on the first day is a bit ridiculous.) Sometimes the game will load without necessary textures, which leave some awkward checker box patches on the ground. (I've ran into it twice now.) While simple zoning out tends to fix this, and it's not a game breaker, it just makes me wonder how bad it will be in the end game areas. And other than the useless GUI, which we are told will eventually be updated, it all seems pretty well done.
As for the highly vaunted Combat System, I'm enamored with it already. It's simple enough that you can find yourself beheading swaths of enemies within a few moments of beginning. It is all that I really wanted and expected out of it and when looking at it now by comparison to what I was shown a number of months back, the delays were worth it.
But, overall, the game looks amazing (even on the lowest possible settings it looks great) the feel is good, the grouping is worth it, PvP and PvE are both equally rewarding and feel well fleshed out. I do, however, plan on jumping back in when LK comes out and I will be playing both. And for those of you who are thinking about jumping over and haven't yet done so, my verdict is wait a short while as the launch issues are still being ironed over. But nonetheless, if Funcom brings us what they have promised, this game is looking to be a good omen at a sign of competition against WoW.
If you are in game already, hop over to Hyperborea (PVP-RP) and look me up under the names.
Joachim (Aquilonian Conquerer) Sigard (Cimmerian Bear Shaman) Soloman (Aquilonian Assassin) Vaelith (Stygian Demonologist)

There is still a lot of stuff they need to finish. I'm sure class balance will take a while too. You have to compare it to how WOW was three years ago -- when lag, server shutdowns, logon problems were all common, and before they reworked each class a couple of times with new talent trees and stuff.
BTW, I don't recommend downloading the game. It's huge. Jon downloaded it and it took like four days -- partly because any time he was downloading we couldn't play WOW because the internet connection got too slow.

I made some characters on Hyperboria also -- seems to be a relatively mature community there. People in ooc chat are very helpful.
Most of the characters have names similar to my wow mains -- Larae is a Conqueror (sort of like a paladin), Celera is a ranger, Thelanya the demonologist etc. So far, though, my favorite is the Tempest of Set, Caliis, which is on Bane.
